Unlike their preceding 348 and 355 Challenge models, Ferrari’s 360 Challenge variant was designated for competition use only from the outset. Whilst the previous two models had relied upon individual Ferrari main dealers upgrading existing road-legal cars by means of a factory-supplied competition pack, the 360 Challenge was built in Maranello as a race car.

Powered by a largely standard version of the road car’s 410 horsepower 3.6-litre V8 engine, the 360 Challenge tipped the scales at almost 200 kilograms less than standard, resulting in a significantly improved power-to-weight ratio. Safety enhancements included a plumbed-in automatic fire extinguisher system and an FIA-approved safety fuel cell equipped with twin fillers.
